03 / The Backing / Participatory layer

Quilting
beyond
Time

The backing touches the body and carries the quilt outward. Online, it becomes the public layer: a clean tool for access, movement and participation.

From memory to participation

A quilt is finished. Its story is not.

Every quilt carries the time, care and memories stitched into it. What remains is not only an object, but an invitation to remember, share and continue the story.

One community quilt, pieced over two days – plus a brooch-making option for early finishers.

Workshop Trace

Two days, one shared quilt.

Quilting has always had a social side: a quilting bee once stretched a shared quilt across a frame so several hands could stitch it at once. "It's QUILTING TIME" translated that into a textile workshop – a free square on day one, a letterform square on day two – before every square was joined into one community quilt.

Collective Surface

From one grid to one quilt.

Individual blocks, made separately, still add up to a shared surface once they sit next to each other – the image on the right is one real record of that moment, before a single stitch joined the squares. The tool further down gives the same collective-surface logic a temporary digital form.

Heike Rosenbaum and Franziska Kluge – the workshop's quilters from Patchwork Gilde Deutschland – then sashed, bordered and quilted the squares into one finished piece, turning many hands into a single object you could actually wrap around yourself. Drag the handle to watch it happen.

Community quilt blocks arranged edge to edge in a grid, not yet sashed or quilted together.
The same blocks now sashed, bordered and quilted into one finished community quilt spelling It's Quilting Time.

Same collective-surface logic as the workshop above, translated into pixels. The grid below is the working cloth: add an optional block template, then choose shape and color. Click a placed piece to rotate it, then export your own quilt block.

The Printed Book

The deeper research lives on paper.

Quilting Time began as a printed editorial book: essays, an extended history and process photographs from the studio, bound by hand in fabric. It holds the research this website only summarizes.

The book is available to purchase – get in touch below for a copy.

Web as Backing

Not a 2nd book.
A place to continue.

The website keeps the project open through short readings, soft movement, workshop traces and an interactive grid. It does not replace the printed book; it gives the research another surface to touch.
